So because the Industry chases the bottom line at the cost of creative self-actualisation (we all know the stock-phrase: ‘no my sweetie, South African audiences are not smart enough to understand that’) what happens is that we never get to see stuff done by independents.  Thank God for City Breath which is a lovely reminder that the medium is an art form (no, really) and independents out there do have a voice that need not pander to the bottom line. Thanks to Curator/Director Kai Lossgott for collecting a representative cross-section of independent SA work. Particularly, Mark Wilby’s Player 1.1 made me want to flesh out a concept, dust off my camera and start shooting.
