A good turnout at the Scout Hall this morning for Eish!, a zippy dialogue commentary on racial stereotyping and South African pop culture and politics. The audience was responsive and laughed when they were supposed to, but sourpuss over here had a harder time with it. Perhaps it had something to do with the average audience member’s age being 16, and mine being not-16, possibly a speedbump on my highway to hilarity. So Michelle Beukes and Danielle Bowler (who wrote and performed it) probably pitched it perfectly.
I found the portrayals of racial and cultural stereotypes tired and unimaginative, which made the tender and earnest epilogue (with the actors addressing the audience as themselves) about their own experiences of racism slightly puzzling.
I’d like to see what Beukes and Bowler are capable of in a couple of years.
